Johans’ Mission Statement:
I pledge to give my listeners a human and organic musical experience, as far as I possibly can.
I am a proud dinosaur: I belong to the last generation of composers who create each note, each chord and each word from scratch – using only our minds, and perhaps a grand piano or an acoustic guitar. I want my listeners to know that I assume full creative responsibility.
After a tracking session, no instrument or vocal is corrected or edited automatically by some clever digital tool. This is because any automatic correction would strip me of creative power and responsibility. I am responsible for my music. Hence, I need to stay in control of it. It is my decision whether a note, any note, should be edited. And if I decide to edit it, I do so manually (and just a smidge). This process ensures that my listeners get the most “Johan” possible – imperfections and all.
My mixing and mastering process follows the same fundamental philosophy: I make sure my music is mixed without any smart tools, suggesting or correcting this or that. It’s better to use ears, spectrograms and reference mixes. Like the dinosaurs did.
